Thanks for stopping by. My name is Joel. I can generally be found probing permafrost in Alaska, getting muddy on a bike, slogging up a mountain with an ice axe, playing “Match My Pitch” with my choir director wife, or posting research updates on social media while swinging in a hammock.
I am a postdoctoral researcher and adjunct teaching faculty at the University of Washington. My research is focused on environmental controls on permafrost thaw, controls on the accompanying wetland carbon release, and the impact of foster youth serving science programs. I am the Associate Director of Fostering Science, a youth education program that provides free science experiences to Alaskan foster youth.
I am always happy to talk about research, outdoor activities, waffle recipes, fieldwork, STEM equity, field safety, or science communication. Whether looking for a research collaborator or mountain bike partner, do not hesitate to email me and/or follow me on social media.
