Thanks for stopping by. My name is Joel. I can generally be found probing permafrost in Alaska, getting muddy on a bike, slogging up a mountain with an ice axe, playing “Match My Pitch” with my choir director wife, or posting research updates on social media while swinging in a hammock.
I am a PhD Candidate at the University of Washington in the Hydro-biogeochemistry Research Group. My research is focused on environmental controls on permafrost thaw and accompanying wetland carbon release. I am particularly interested in how these processes will change as northern high latitudes become warmer and wetter due to climate change. I am also the Associate Director of Fostering Science, a youth education program that provides free science experiences to Alaskan foster youth.
I am always happy to talk about research, outdoor activities, waffle recipes, fieldwork, STEM equity, field safety, or science communication. Whether looking for a research collaborator or mountain bike partner, do not hesitate to email me and/or follow me on social media.
